Van Gogh brand prize

Friends, we continued to review the product articles of ART partner companies Step by Step.

Royal Talens provided us with three different prize sets, which our finalists received and, of course, the winner of the competition.

The first review of brands by Rembrandt for the winner of the competition was published on February 9, and you can find it on the website http://artstepbystep.pl/ in the NEWS section.

Royal Talens — a world-famous company specializing in the creation of professional art materials. The main production facilities are located in the city of Apeldoorn (Netherlands). The company was founded in 1899 by Marten Talens, who was in love with painting. After a while, when his products were highly appreciated by many artists, the royal family of the Netherlands decided to assign the company the title of Royal.

And today I present to you the prize for the finalist from Royal Talens, the Van Gogh brand.

Van Gogh water colours are a student and artist level range of paints featuring brilliant, transparent, and intense colours with high tinting strength. Most colours are rated with the highest degree of lightfastness +++ (100+ years under museum conditions) with a few colours rated just one step below at ++ (25-100 years under museum conditions). Thanks to the purity and uniform viscosity, these water colours are easy to work with and easy to mix. Proudly produced in Holland with stringent quality control for a consistent experience with every purchase.

The golden synthetic hair bundle can absorb a large amount of water and has a round shape with a very fine tip for detailed working. This brush has a hair bundle width of 2.2 mm This was the technical side of this set. Let’s move on to practice and consider the materials in more detail.

Water Color Plastic Case Set with 24 Colors in Half Pans — the set is packed in a cardboard box, on the box there is general brand information and digital designations of the colors of the set (more detailed information on the composition of each color is indicated on the packaging of each cuvette).

Set is equipped with a plastic box, Van Gogh brush series 191 number 6, sponge and 24 color cuvette.

White plastic box of rectangular shape. The top cover is divided into 6 compartments — a palette. (Slightly departing from the topic, I want to say that this is not the first set of colors of this brand that fell into my hands. Three years ago I received a wonderful holiday gift — a set of 18 colors in a plastic box and managed to fall in love with many colors from this set.)

From my own experience I’ll say that the cover can be easily used as a palette, good quality plastic does not absorb color and does not stain at all, a good separation allows you to use several colors at the same time and make batches, even for large fills. The panel with the cuvettes is removable, which makes it very convenient to use (it’s easy to wash, I also kept the paint under the panel, and until it was made, I kept the paper packaging of all the cuvettes in order to know the properties of any of the colors).

All cuvettes are packed in a paper wrapper, where all the information (pigments, light fastness, transparency, etc.) about this color, in several languages, is indicated. Each cuvette has a color number and the first letter of the brand. All colors of this set are very bright and saturated, at the same time they are transparent and light. Paint easily interacts with water and is easy to type, all blue shades have long settled in my palette, and Cerulean Blue (Phthalo) 535 and Lemon Yellow 254 are my favorites, thanks to these colors I get such a spectacular sky.

The brush from this set — from synthetic fiber number 6 of the 191 series — is a round shape with a thin elastic tip, I often use this brush from my set, it has worn out a little over 3 years and a new one will very successfully replace it. I won’t say much, it’s just a very convenient universal brush, suitable for kneading, and for working out details, for me, is indispensable in a small format.

18 colors from this palette — two pigmented, 6 colors — one pigmented. All colors of this set have maximum light fastness and almost all have maximum transparency. Below are the works that I created, working with Van Gogh watercolors

Water Color Paper Block, 12 Sheets, 300g / 140lb., Size 24 x 32cm / 9.4 «x 12.6» — block is standardly packed in polyethylene. The block format, in my opinion, is convenient for plein airs. The bottom cover is thick cardboard, 3 mm thick., Essentially a tablet. The first of the presented colorings is made on this paper. High density and moderate texture make the paper versatile. It is easy to work with it using the Ala prima technique, and at the same time, paper is also suitable for the meticulous study of botanical watercolors.

“Summer Cafe” 21 * 29 cm, the work was done according to the lesson of Sergey Kurbatov and for this work I used these colors of the Van Gogh palette:108 Chinese White, 254 Permanent Lemon Yellow, 238 Gamboge, 266 Permanent Orange, 512 Cobalt Blue Ultramarine, 409 Burnt Umber, 371 Permanent Red Deep, 623 Sap Green, 645 Hooker Green Deep and from Van Gogh’s own palette 533 Indigo.

Water Color Paper Block, 12 Sheets, 300g / 140lb., Size 18 x 24cm / 7.01 «x 9.4» — the second block that is included in the gift, the paper is identical in properties, but the format is smaller, which allows you to use gluing for small sketches in open air, it is also ideal for a mini format, it is easy to fit even in a small bag, no one knows when we will meet an impressive landscape 😉

«Disturbing Heaven» for this work, I used Van Gogh colors:254 Permanent Lemon Yellow, 535 Cerulean Blue (Phthalo), 508 Prussian Blue, 708 Payne’S Gray and from Van Gogh’s own palette 533 Indigo.

Water Color Brush, Series 194 No. 16 — — In my opinion, the brush is versatile in working with various parts and techniques, synthetic, moderately elastic pile, pointed at the top, allows you to draw thin lines and well picks up color and emphasize details.

Water Color Brush, Series 191 No. 0 — A great form for working out small details or finishing touches. It has a round sharp tip and has good elasticity, which allows you to better coordinate your movements, or rather draw.

«Cold coast» 38 * 56 cm used only Van Gogh colors.

Conclusion

Water Color Plastic Case Set with 24 Colors in Half Pans — a magnificent, easy-to-use set, an excellent color palette, the quality of paints at the highest level. All colors interact perfectly with water, all declared properties are 100% confirmed. I have been working with Van Gogh watercolors for a little over two years and during this time I have not found a single minus, in addition, the price-quality ratio is on top.

Water Color Paper Block, 12 Sheets, 300g / 140lb., — the smaller block has become an integral part of my backpack while walking, which indicates its practicality. The quality of the paper is at a level, it holds water well and interacts well with paints, of course, this paper, like any new one needs to get used to and adapt, I will get to know it better  I am satisfied with the work done on this paper, moderate texture makes it possible to work in different techniques and even different materials.

With great pleasure I will continue to work with these materials and I will add works written by Van Gogh paints on my page in the FB and on my website, in the near future I will make a step-by-step watercolor with these paints, so I’ll see you;).

Thank you for attention!
